Licence
As
a learner, a rider must have a provisional licence
and a valid CBT Certificate (DL196) before riding
on the road. At 16 a prospective rider can apply for
a licence for a moped, (Group P); forms are available
from the Post Office. It is illegal to ride a moped
on the road without a licence and successful completion
of a CBT course. At 17 the licence will automatically
become a provisional car licence (Group B). Licence
application forms are available from Post Offices.
Endorsements
on a Driving Licence (Penalty Points).
Penalty Points are issued for a range of offences,
for example: speeding, riding without insurance, no
‘L’ plates and dangerous riding. Depending
on the severity of the offence Penalty Points can
stay on a licence for up to eleven years.
Most
offences also incur a fine. Any Penalty Points issued
to a rider before they pass their test will continue
after the test is passed. Since the introduction of
the New Driver Act in April 1997, newly qualified
drivers and riders will return to learner status if
they get six or more points on their licence within
two years of passing the test.
